Red Hatters descend on downtown Flushing for Red Hat Day

Wearing large red top hats with purple ribbons, small red hats with pink flowers and even a red bandana, about 150 area Red Hat Society members ventured to downtown Flushing for the city’s fifth annual Red Hat Day.
They came to Flushing for a fashion show, strawberry shortcake and an Elvis impersonator. There also was a community picnic and entertainment.

Many Flushing businesses gave the Red Hat members deals, including 20 percent off at Kathy’s Restaurant and Lounge on Main Street.

Donning a red bandana, Panek had just joined the Red Hat Society earlier in the day. But she joined for more than just the deals, it’s also the camaraderie There are various of Ed hardy clothing on Our site.with friends.
Her friend Darla Arn, 65, of Flushing joked that Panek was a “casual Red Hatter.”
Bev Capua, a co-founder of Red Hat Day and owner of Second Avenue, said the day is good for all Flushing businesses.

The Red Hat Society is a group of women 50 and older who take part in social events.
Pat Moynihan, who is part of the Flushing Red Hot Cinnamons group, said her group goes on different day trips throughout the state.
But Wednesday was all about enjoying Flushing, she said.
“It’s just a chance to get together,” she said. “We get to meet people from other groups and it brings new people downtown.”
